You can create your own unofficial (alt) local newsgroups with InterNews. These newsgroups will only be seen by people on this campus. If you would like to create a newsgroup for some official use, you should post a request to the group dartmouth.news.internews.
To create a newsgroup, choose the Create Newsgroup… command from the Subscription menu. A window will appear asking you for the name of the newsgroup and a short description of the newsgroup.
The new newsgroup will appear to all users as a new newsgroup sometime within the next few days. The newshost System Administrator will create it when time allows.
There are a few restrictions on the name of a new newsgroup:
• The name will start with the prefix 'dartmouth.alt'.
• There cannot be two newsgroups with the same name.
• There is a hierarchy of newsgroups. Each level in the hierarchy is denoted by a word followed by a period. For example, alt.rec.humor is a subgroup of alt.rec. If your new group fits conceptually within an existing hierarchy, use the name to signify the relationship.
• A part of the name between periods cannot be the word 'all'.
• A part of the name between periods cannot be longer than 14 characters.
• The name can consist of letters, numbers, +, and -. Spaces are not allowed.
• The name will appear in all lower case letters.
